چکیده

This paper investigates in terms of Kolmogorov complexity the diierences between the information necessary to compute a recursive function and the information contained in its graph. Our rst result is that the complexity of the initial parts of the graph of a recursive function, although bounded, has almost never a limit. The second result is that the complexity of these initial parts approximate the complexity of the function itself in most cases (and in the average) but not always. An Applied Linguistics Look at the Linguistic Comparison of Nominal Group Complexity between Two Samples of a Genre

The roles and effects of changes in syntax on comprehension and processing effort, and the relationships between these two, comprise a large and separate field of inquiry, with the general belief now in place that such changes and variations bring about varied psycholinguistic and discursive implications for comprehension, manifesting themselves differently in different genres. The current study...

A MULTI-OBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION MODEL FOR PROJECT PORTFOLIO SELECTION CONSIDERING AGGREGATE COMPLEXITY: A CASE STUDY

Existing project selection models do not consider the complexity of projects as a selection criterion, while their complexity may prolong the project duration and even result in its failure. In addition, existing models cannot formulate the aggregate complexity of the selected projects. The aggregated complexity is not always equal to summation of complexity of projects because of possible syne...

Cognitive Task Complexity and Iranian EFL Learners’ Written Linguistic Performance across Writing Proficiency Levels

Recently tasks, as the basic units of syllabi, and the cognitive complexity, as the criterion for sequencing them, have caught many second language researchers’ attention. This study sought to explore the effect of utilizing the cognitively simple and complex tasks on high- and low-proficient EFL Iranian writers’ linguistic performance, i.e., fluency, accuracy, lexical complexity, and structura...

TOEFL iBT integrated speaking tests: a comparison of test-takers' performance in terms of complexity, accuracy, and fluency

This study compares three integrated tasks of the TOEFL iBT speaking subtest in terms of complexity, accuracy, and fluency. To this end, a group of TOEFL iBT Iranian candidates took a simulated TOEFL iBT some days prior to their real exam. The collected oral responses were first transcribed and then quantified using software such as ‘Syllable Counter’ and ‘Coh-Metrix3’ for fluency and complexit...

A New Approach to Detect Congestive Heart Failure Using Symbolic Dynamics Analysis of Electrocardiogram Signal

The aim of this study is to show that the measures derived from Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals many a time perform better than the same measures obtained from heart rate (HR) signals. A comparison was made to investigate how far the nonlinear symbolic dynamics approach helps to characterize the nonlinear properties of ECG signals and HR signals, and thereby discriminate between normal and cong...
